The early years of radiation protection: a tribute to Madame Curie.
In 1936, almost 4 decades after the discovery of the x-ray and of radium, the German Röntgen Society erected a monument to commemorate all who had died as a consequence of exposure to x-rays or radium. George W.C. Kaye of the US National Physical Laboratory wrote the inscription: “To the röntgenologists and radiologists of all nations, doctors, physicists, chemists, technical workers, laborator...
متن کاملMadame Maria Sklodowska-Curie – brilliant scientist, humanitarian, humble hero: Poland's gift to the World
In 1911, when the Nobel Foundation awarded its coveted Chemistry Prize to a 44 year old Polish born woman, it is likely they may not have expected the action ever duplicated in the more than 100 years that followed. In fact, it was the second Nobel Prize in the sciences awarded to Maria Sklodowska-Curie, whom the world would come to admire, know, and love as Madame Curie. In a time of science d...
متن کاملSchema.org for the Semantic Web with MaDaME
Schema.org is a high profile initiative to introduce structured markup into web sites. However, the markup is designed for use cases relevant to search engines, which limits their general usefulness. MaDaME is a tool to help web developers to annotate their web pages with schema.org annotations, but in addition automatically injects semantic metadata from SUMO and WordNet. It is unlike previous...
متن کاملA Chat about Chat
This is an informal discussion from my personal perspective on computersupported collaborative learning (CSCL). I envision an epical opportunity for promising new media to enable interpersonal interaction with today’s network technologies. While asynchronous media have often been tried in classroom settings, I have found that synchronous text chat in small workgroups can be particularly engagin...
متن کاملA Curie-Weiss model with dissipation
We consider stochastic dynamics for a spin system with mean field interaction, in which the interaction potential is subject to noisy and dissipative stochastic evolution. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit and at sufficiently low temperature, the magnetization of the system has a time periodic behavior, despite of the fact that no periodic force is applied.
